One very important activity of the Rehabilitation
Centre is rehabilitation research. Rehabilitation services were started
by the Indian Cancer Society on the basis of a research project entitled
"Socio-economic problems of Cancer Patients" in the year 1961. Since
then several rehabilitation research project have been undertaken by the
staff of the Rehabilitation Centre. Two five-year research projects viz.
"Rehabilitation of cancer patients and their families in Urban Areas"
and "Rehabilitation of cancer patients and their families in Rural
Areas" undertaken in collaboration with the Social and Rehabilitation
Services and later National Institute of Handicapped Research of the U.
S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare have been widely
acclaimed by International Rehabilitation experts.
Other important research projects undertaken by
the staff of the Rehabilitation Centre are:

Identification of
rehabilitation problems faced by children and youth survivors from
cancer and their families in order to evolve suitable
rehabilitation techniques

Psychological
problems and supportive care of cancer patients in India.

Identification of
suitable light durable raw-materials for preparing artificial
limbs and other orthotic devices.

Identification of
suitable technical areas for training specific categories of the
cancer disabled.

A study of
psychological impact of Mastectomy on female patients and factors
which facilitate their psycho-social rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation of
cancer patients and their families from rural areas in six
districts of Western Maharashtra supported by Ministry of Welfare,
Government of India.

Rehabilitation of
Rural patients from Vidarbha region supported by OXFAM, London.
