Indian Cancer Society& - C. K. Handoo Scholarship for Research in Cancer

ICS relaunched the CK Handoo Scholarship on World Cancer Day in February 2023 by broadening the scope and criteria.

The corpus represents a donation by Mrs. Manorajana Kaul in 1969 in memory of her late mother Mrs. Chandra Kumari Handoo; the interest derived out of the corpus is used for the grant to grant fellowship award to students doing research in field of Cancer.

Aim - "To provide grants for study and research in cancer – its control, treatment and care."

Eligibility Criteria

Health care workers and professionals (doctors, nurses, counselors, social workers, public health workers) who wish to study any aspect of cancer care - its prevention, treatment & care. NGOs are also eligible.

If the applicant is an individual he /she must be below 40 years of age as on 15th July of the application submission year.

Applicant must be an Indian National. If the applicant is an NGO, it should be registered in India with the relevant authority.

Area of Study

Applicants are requested to select the most appropriate topic, as well as the type of cancer they work on, if relevant.

  • Cancer prevention
  • Causes of cancer
  • Cancer registries, analysis of cancer data
  • Early detection, pathology, diagnosis & prognosis
  • Cancer treatment
  • Patient support, survivorship and palliative care
  • Counselling, nutrition support
  • National cancer control plans

The applicant cannot use the funds for pursuing any professional course

How to Apply

For the year 2024-25, applications to be submitted online by filling form latest by 30th April 2024 for the year 2024-25 with the following attachments:

  • Statement of purpose of the study (about 300 words) – Preferably a prospective study to be conducted in India
  • Incase the applicant is an individual, a certificate needs to be issued by the head of the institution where the applicant is working. The certificate should state the nature and benefit of the study.
  • Detailed budget of the study
  • Details of work already done in the area of proposed study
  • Preference will be given to studies benefiting underprivileged people and not persons.
  • Ethics approval is needed if the project involves topics that require a subject's consent.

About the Grant Amount

Two scholarships of Rs 50,000 each. This is a one-time grant.

The award of the grant does not preclude the applicant from approaching any other source for the same project as long as the Indian Cancer Society is kept informed.

Process of award of grant:

On receipt of all applications by the last date (30th April, 2024), the Screening Committee constituted by the ICS will evaluate the applications to decide on which the grants will be awarded. Face to face / virtual round of interview for the shortlisted candidates will be scheduled. The decision of the screening committee appointed by the Indian Cancer Society will be final and will be communicated to the applicant.

Submission of Study

At the end of the study the applicant will be required to submit a project report including the methodology, the findings and outcome of the study, its implications for cancer control and possible applications and how the applicant proposes to disseminate the findings.

The status of the study/ report will have to be submitted to ICS by 30th April,2025. The applicant must report once in two months - the progress during the year in the manner that will be intimated.

Dissemination of outcome of award

On successful completion of the study to the satisfaction of the ICS, the outcome of the study will be disseminated and the applicant’s work acknowledged in any appropriate event to be decided by the ICS.

  • Application Details and process has to be followed as per details given.
  • The decision of the Screening Committee appointed by Indian Cancer Society will be final and will be intimated to the applicant and also published on the website.
  • Dates for applications and related to the Scholarships wont be altered unless specific ICS shares on this website.
  • About the grant amount required documentation will have to be completed
  • As per the Govt guidelines TDS and tax will be deducted and details of the same will be provided to the beneficiary.
